Fibroids are generally semicircular or circular in shape. They arise from the muscular wall of your uterus. Fibroids can be located either inside the uterus or outside it, attached to its wall. From single to multiple, the number of fibroids can also be highly variable.
Most women with fibroids have no symptoms. However, abnormal uterine bleeding is the most common symptom of a uterine fibroid. If the fibroids are near the uterine lining, or interfere with the blood flow to the lining, they can cause heavy periods, painful periods, prolonged periods or spotting between menses. Fibroids occur mostly in women in the 3rd to 4th decades. The signs may be, a change in your menstrual periods, either in being longer or more frequent, as well as being more painful (dysmenorrhoea). You may also get anaemia from excessive bleeding. You may also have difficulty in passing urine or stools. You may have pain or swelling in the abdominal area. Miscarriages and infertility can result in larger fibroids. Sometimes, fibroids have no symptoms and are detected only on routine examinations.
If you notice any of the warning signs or other changes in your breast, chest, or nipple, consult a doctor immediately. The warning signs include a recent or a growing lump, skin changes, nipple changes like a blood-stained discharge or an inversion of nipple or a rash on a nipple/ breast. A change in the size, shape of breast or a painful area is also a warning sign.
Fibroids are of varied shapes as well, they may be so tiny that could not be seen properly without a microscope, or are sometimes so big that they can fill the whole uterine cavity. Based on their location in the uterus the fibroids are classified into various types as shown below.
